I wonder if one of you Trados wizards can help me.
I have a text that is full of strings such as this one:
"Deals a superior amount of damage to an enemy \n Left click icon then left click on target"
Trados takes this as one segment. The TM provided by my client, however, contains the same text as two segments:

Hi everyone,
I wonder if one of you Trados wizards can help me.
I have a text that is full of strings such as this one:
"Deals a superior amount of damage to an enemy \n Left click icon then left click on target"
Trados takes this as one segment. The TM provided by my client, however, contains the same text as two segments:
1. "Deals a superior amount of damage to an enemy"
2. "Left click icon then left click on target"
I'm trying to change the segmentation rules so that Trados divides the text the way it is divided in the existing TM. So far, I get it to split the text in two parts, but the \n is considered part of the first segment. How can I manage to exclude the \n and just have two segments?

Maybe substitution...

What I would do is to substitute the \n sequence with something which would not be recognized as text by Trados (for example, you your translation does not have tabs, with a tab). Then, after the cleanup, I would replace the substitution sequence back to \n.

Format all "\n" as external TAG
Dec 14, 2005
To do so, use "search & replace" in Word.
Search for \n and replace it by \n with the style "tw4winexternal".
Trados should then stop at this TAG.
Good luck
Jerzy
PS
Just testet that: it works!
After the translation you simply need to delete the tw4winexternal style, then all \n will become normal again - so you need to search and replace only at the beginning.

Thanks, Jerzy, that worked just fine. Let's hope I manage to go back to the old style once I'm finished with the translation...

As already stated above

simply delete the "tw4winexternal" style after your translation is finished and all \n will get back to their previous style (they take the style from the paragraph style of the neighbour text). Unless your Word file is very sophisticated formatted, this will work. Should those "\n" have a special style, so simply note it down and than replace back again.
Best
Jerzy
