Hi people,
Is there any way to set Trados so it automatically names the analyse log (analysed file name).log and saves it to the same folder where the file being analysed is, instead of having to type in a new name and location all the time?
Also this would prevent the Translate/Clean Up log overwriting and deleting the Analyse log.
Thanks
Jo

No, but... Dec 5, 2005

...if all your files for the current analysis are in the same directory, the quickest way to get an analysis log in that directory is provided by the Browse button. We always click it once all files are in the list and then enter "analyse" (without the quotes and, yes, without extension). This results in a file analyse.log being placed right next to the analyzed files.

Not VERY user friendly, but quite fast once you're used to it.

HTH,
Benjamin

Browse button Dec 5, 2005

Thanks Benjamin,
Yep, that's what I'm doing now.

I suppose Trados is designed for translating a lot of files in a project and for that there's no point in having a function that automatically names the log as, which file should it pick?

However, when working with single files this would be really handy, for Analyse, Translate, and Clean Up.

At the moment having to Browse to the same directory you're working in, and copy/paste the file name to the log is time consuming, and there is always the risk you'll accidentally overwrite a log if you forget to change the name every time.

Or am I missing something?

The magic behind the Browse... button Dec 5, 2005

Actually, you don't have to browse to the directory (clicking on Browse... will automagically put you in the right directory), so you just have to enter the file name. But if you need a log whose name matches "Quarterly_Report_00-25182XY_d'Artagnan.doc", you're still in for a lot of typing or copy 'n' pasting.

Me, I use the Windows 95 (yes 95) Send To... Powertoy on my Windows XP system. It can send the path and file name of any file to the clipboard. Combined with a macro recorder

Send to Dec 5, 2005

Thanks for that Ben,
Just downloaded Send to Powertoy, cool. I was using the rename function and copying that.

Anyway I hope they'll write this sort of function into Trados in the future because it would save a lot of time. Just a check box you can select to either generate the log automatically with the source file name + maybe Analyse log, Translate.log and Clean-up.log. This way there would also be no risk of accidentally overwriting log files.

Yeah, me too, until I remembered W95 had this cool gadget. By the way, the installer creates a lot of unnecessary entries in the Send To... list, e.g. several e-mail entries. To easily remove these, use the Add/Remove Programs applet in your Control Panel. Select the Send To Extensions powertoy from the list and choose Modify/Remove. A dialog will appear on your screen asking which of the Send To extensions you'd like to remove. Kind of an awkward way to achieve a custom install, but it works.

I don't think it's likely that they will implement this. As you said previously, Trados is designed to analyze, pretranslate and clean several files at once. But you never know...

Install dialogue box Dec 5, 2005

I tried that and it just removed the prog from the computer.
I did manage it though reinstalling, using the Install dialogue box.

Maybe I should start a petition of requests for “Cool new features translators want in the next Trados update”

Worked with the intelligent (well almost) copy/paste in Sdlx.

I’m on quite friendly terms with Fasil on the tech team.
I bug him occasionally about bugs.

Here goes:
Use source filename for log (default)
Sort bugs in Trados.dot toolbar template

That’s 2 already.
