So, is a forum social media? The answer is a resounding yes. While forums may differ from mainstream social media platforms in several ways, they share many of the same core features and have played a vital role in the evolution of the digital landscape.

AI Overview

Social media refers to internet-based applications and websites that allow users to create, share, and exchange content, ideas, and information in virtual communities. It emphasizes user-generated content, interaction, and networking through text, images, and videos.
Key Examples of Social Media Platforms:
Social Networking: Facebook, LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter).
Photo/Video Sharing: Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat.
Discussion & Forums: Reddit, Quora, Discord.
Messaging & Community: WhatsApp, Telegram.
Blogging/Content Sharing: Tumblr, Medium, WordPress.

Regarding this poll question. Am I supposed to act all surprised that something on the Internet has been AI generated or AI translated? Also, am I supposed to have an opinion on it?

They maybe truly believe their own hype, or simply want 'free advertising' for their wares to a captive audience, but all I can see there is some usefulness bundled with a LOT of potential for 'turning attempted communication into hopeless lack of any real communication'.

I would use that kind of 'help' ONLY for the most inconsequential chit-chat, and even then I would not trust it for giving me anything more than some approximative draft of what the message in some language I don't understand is supposed to mean.

You could also see it as a 'completely (cost-)free' very large scale testing of this software - 'free' for those working on improving the software. Better than using 'annotators'.

The logic of it? As long as the interaction keeps going, there is a high probability that not that much gets 'lost in translation'. The same way that in translating [i.e. a one-way communication] nonsense gets 'discovered' often much later and in some other place while in interpreting [i.e. in a continuous interaction] any nonsense becomes quickly obvious then and there.

Of course, the 'cost' to the unwitting free testers of any ridiculous misunderstanding created by 'errors in AI translations' would never be AI’s fault ... you can trust their lawyers to make sure of that.

"I turned it off." Apr 20

Since "I turned it off." is an option, I gather that one can turn it off. That's better than LinkedIn, at least, where you have no control over whether your posts are translated. I'm not sure if LinkedIn uses AI or MT translation, though. The last time this happened to me, the translation was so bad I would not believe it's AI.
