In Argentina it's Papá Noel, but traditionally who brings Christmas presents is " el Niñito Dios" (God Child).

Felices fiestas,

P.

Both Papá Noel and Niñito Dios sound so cute.

Over here,

it's: D(j)ed(a) Mraz, Djed Božičnjak

or in the Orthodox Church: Sveti Nikola

France - North and East: Saint Nicolas Dec 22, 2010

In Northern and Eastern France there is also Saint Nicolas coming on December 6th.

He is supposed to ride on a donkey, so on December 5th before going to bed young children prepare a carrot for the donkey and a glas of brandy for Saint Nicolas.

In Germany, too, though Weihnachtsmann is correct, it's the Christchild ("Das Christkind") who brings the presents. OK, so does the "Christmas man" but I think the Christchild is the older tradition. And of course in my pro-Christian bias I lke that one way better. OK OK, I know St. Nick was a Christian, too, but you get my drift.

Although Weihnachtsmann and other-language versions of "the Xmas guy" obviously have their roots in St Nick, it seems the venerable old bishop himself, at least in his red-suited Santa Claus incarnation, was popularized probably more by American culture than by any other. Granted, Santa already "existed", but it was America, in its own inimitable Madison Avenue way, that made him a superstar.

You got my word on that one, Werner...
In some pubs here in the Czech Rep., there are even stickers on the entrance door saying "No Santas allowed! The Jesus Child brings presents here!".

Дед Мороз [ded ma'ros] | Дiд Мороз [di:d mo'roz]
(Father Frost) - more often and very traditional

Святой Николай [svja'toj niko'laj] | Святий Миколай [svja'tij miko'laj]
(St. Nicholas) - getting popular since late 90-s, esp. in Ukraine
