I was stunned having seen this job posting on ProZ. Someone's offering this:

***

It is roughly a 57 word editing and proofreading job. We are willing to pay $0.020 USD for the job, bringing it to a total of $1.14 USD.

If you are outside the *** we can pay you via Paypal or Moneybooker's.

***

I am truly delighted with all this. I need your opinions: Do I only bid on this "project" or should I also offer them a discount?

Sending them application files and typing an email is definitely worth more than $5.

Have you ever seen anything like this published on a public job portal? It's an utter disgrace.

Shhhh, don't tell everyone - or you'll get trampled in the stampede, as they all rush to quote for the job.

The deal of the century Nov 24, 2009

The Paypal or Moneybookers withdrawal fees would be probably more than this amount...

Actually, this client is pretty generous. After all, he did not ask the translators to pay him for this incredible opportunity!!!

57 words Nov 24, 2009

I think I've seen this 57- word project being re-posted several times in the past week or so.. I guess they haven't found anyone, and therefore keep reposting it.

I bet that 57-word content is some marketing material done by a $ 0,01 translator and they expect you to turn it into a beautiful, winning copy at the supreme $ 1.14 rate.

Since it's only 57 words, I presume it's either an ad or a manual, either way it's not as small a job as it may seem. Even if it were, it's

I offered $50 Nov 24, 2009

Rather than feel offended, I decided to place a bid for USD $50. I haven't heard back from them yet, though...

Quoting fee Nov 24, 2009

I love it when I get these kinds of requests via e-mail. I quote them $50.00 minimum for the job and then send them a $10.00 invoice for the quoting fee (that will be discounted from the job). No one ever said that quotes have to be free.

You could always go a step further, and sue them for the trauma and damage caused by their efforts to devalue your profession. Could be worth a class action?

for these 57 words (DE-FI). I wonder if it's the same stuff (Wii)? Should be ready by noon, but I put the message into the bin.

Nice plan, but it failed Nov 24, 2009

I guess they had a well-designed plan in theory, but it didn't work out that well in practice:

1. Find a cheap translator or have it translated with translation machine ( I have no idea what the text looks like, yet they want me to quote my price? It may easily be a machine translation, or an awful human translation).

2. Find even a cheaper proofreader who will fall for the fact that " it's only a proofreading job" and then quote with a cheap price.

This way we get a perfect translation and we pay only peanuts. Aren't we so bright?

Based on these parameters, proofreading may be worth from 0.05 to 0.20 USD per word. And why, oh why, do they always deny the element of research in proofreading?

I think this is the lowest offer for the whole project (or whatever you might want to call this), but I've seen similar offers such as 5 USD or 10 USD for the whole project, and the only method of payment is by bank transfer, regardless of where you live.

The question is: would you take this excellent pay despite a relatively long 40-day deadline?
