Spanish term

acertemos el número y también la serie.

Spanish to English Science Mathematics & Statistics Estadística
It is about a lottery. To make the context clearer I give my own interpretation below:

"¿Y si el sorteo fuese distinto? Si, por ejemplo, ahora los números que forman el boleto premiado se van obteniendo de 5 bombos diferentes del 0 al 9, y tuviésemos un sexto bombo que nos marca una serie (supongamos que hay 50 números de serie). Aquí la situación se va complicando puesto que ahora para ganar el premio tienen que ocurrir dos cosas, que acertemos el número y también la serie."

"What if the lottery would be different? If, for example, now the numbers that are listed on the winning ticket will have to be obtained from five different drums, from 0 to 9, and if we had a sixth drum which would give us a serial number (let’s say there are 50 serial numbers). Here the situation grows more complicated since now to win the prize two things have to happen, that we get the number and the serial number."

Discussion

Ashley Musick Feb 26, 2013:
Tense Along the same lines as the previous comment, I would translate "se van obteniendo" as "are obtained" instead of switching into future perfect.
Karen Vincent-Jones (X) Feb 26, 2013:
Subjunctive Off-topic, I know, but 'fuese' is a subjunctive, and should be translated as 'were', not 'would be', i.e. 'what if the lottery were organised differently?' Or, more colloquially, "what if we organised the lottery differently?"

that we guess the right number, and also the right series.

That is, if it was Spanish into English, and not the other way round.

Thank you, Carl.
agree Charles Davis : I completely agree with this, except for "guess"; I think it should be "get", because this is the kind of lottery where we buy a number but we can't choose any number we like. But I don't want to post an alternative for the sake of one word!

that we match both the number and the serial number

serial number or series, depending on your previous choice.

The sentence would be something like:

Now the situation gets more complicated, as we have to match both the number and the serial number.

both the ticket number and the serial number must match

It's an impersonal construction, and it's best to repeat the word "number".
