English term

gazeteering function

English to Japanese Tech/Engineering Computers: Systems, Networks geographical information system
What does "gazeteering" mean? What would be the appropriate Japanese translation?
It seems that this function is used to select addresses in a GIS system.

地名検索機能

I believe this would be a typo of "gazetteering". According to Wikipedia, "A gazetteer is a geographical dictionary or directory, an important reference for information about places and place names, used in conjunction with a map or a full atlas".

My suggested translation would be 地名検索機能 or 地名索引機能.

agree Mitsuko Yoshida : By googling 地名索引機能 hits more than 地名索引機能. and 地名辞典機能 (only one hit).

地名索引機能

The word "gazetteering" is often seen. It must be to create a list of place names in the alphabetical order or the like. Just a guess...
