Translation - English No less significant is the presence of arsenic in emissions from coke-oven batteries. Operating personnel on the upper storey and in the immediate vicinity of the oven are regularly subjected to the pronounced effect of heat, harmful gases and dust. However, it is not only the polycyclic substances there that have carcinogenic properties, such as hydrocarbon 3.4- benzpyrene, to name a well-known example, arsenic does as well; although we currently do not know about the quantity in which it is present. The ambient air of industrial cities contains an average of 0.00002 mg/m³ of arsenic. In Great Britain, this figure can be as high as 0.00013mg/m³.
