Source text - English France has a particularly unique relationship with manga, and one which stretches much further than the confines of Paris. For the last 10 years, tens of thousands of volumes have been sold across France, making it no less than the second biggest market for manga in the world after Japan. Japanese culture is, clearly, here to stay, with all of France's major cities boasting specialty manga shops.
In Paris, there are a dozen or so scattered throughout the 5th and 11th arrondissements (a swish Left Bank area with a hefty literary heritage, and a trendier Right Bank neighbourhood). You'll find boutiques with names like Little Tokyo, Hayake Shop, Manga Toys and Manga Space – and that's just the specialists, as most general bookshops have a dedicated manga section. There's even a Manga Café near Paris's national library (an adaptation of the Japanese concept of 'manga kissa'), which opened in 2010 and is the biggest library of mangas in France with more than 10,000 volumes, which can be consulted for €3 an hour while fuelling on coffee or bentos. And for the last 15 years, Paris has welcomed two major events for fans of manga and Japanese pop culture – the Japan Expo in July, and the Salon Paris Manga in February.
If manga represents more than a third of comic book sales in France today, its popularity abroad didn't happen easily. In 1983, the famous comic book publishers Les Humanoïdes Associés decided to start distributing Japanese works, starting with the excellent 'Barefoot Gen' by Keiji Nakazawa, but the project bombed. Manga had to wait for a new generation of readers with tastes beyond the Franco-Belgian Tintin tradition – a generation that came of age at the beginning of the ’90s thanks to the influence of television. Toei Animation films were shown on French television starting in 1987: 'Dragon Ball', 'Saint Seiya' and the very controversial 'Fist of the North Star', which started a tense debate in France, with a strong anti-manga movement building in the media (particularly the cultural journal Télérama) and politics. Animations aimed at children were even censored.
Despite this, the public began to take an interest in the aesthetics and the often sombre style of manga. In 1990, the publication of the amazing and complex 'Akira' by Katsuhiro Ōtomo was the first stage in the success of manga in France – and in 1993, 'Dragon Ball' arrived on the city's shelves, and the market started to explode – as did sales of videogame consoles by Japanese brands Nintendo and Sega.
The beginning of the 2000s brought the golden age of manga in France, with the publication of series like 'One Piece', 'Naruto', 'Hunter X Hunter', 'Monster' and 'Bleach'. The proof that the genre had turned a corner came in 2003 when 'NonNonBâ' by Shigeru Mizuki (edited by the independent publisher Cornélius) won a prize for the best comic at Paris's annual comics festival Angoulême. And in 2014, Katsuhiro Ōtomo won the jury's grand prize for his lifetime's work – a most prestigious accolade from the most important event in international comics in France. There's even talk, now, of founding a French school for 'mangaka' comic artists.
Although the manga market in France has risked saturation since around 2010, manga culture in France has found new élan thanks to the Internet, with a new generation of fans (half of all manga in France is read by 11-14 year olds) – huge numbers of sites and forums dedicated to Japanese pop culture and its by-products, be they videogames, cosplay or J-Pop. And, of course, immumerable mangas.

Shichifukujin are the seven gods that are believed in Japan to be gods of luck that bring good fortune. By worshiping the Shichifukujin, it is said that you will have your wishes fulfilled, such as perpetual youth and long life, prosperity of business, good harvest, and safety of your family.
There are many Shichifukujins across Japan, but amongst them, the Fukagawa Shichifukujin is famous as the Shichifukujin of Tokyo. It is popular not only because there are many historic sites in the area, but also because you can tour the gods while taking in the old, downtown atmosphere that this neighborhood has retained.
The Fukagawa Shichifukujin are enshrined in three temples and four shrines, and although you can start the tour from any point, it is the easiest to start from the Ebisushin at the Tomioka Hachimangu Shrine to the Juroujin at the Fukagawa Shinmeigu Shrine, or the other way around.

The deregulation of Japan’s airline industry and the growth in budget airlines (known as LCCs in Japan) mean that domestic flights have become much cheaper in recent years, making air travel an economical alternative to trains. Both JAL and ANA offer air passes for overseas visitors, allowing them to fly anywhere with in Japan for a discounted price. These make for decent value in the case of long-distance travel, such as from Tokyo to Kyushu, Okinawa
or Hokkaido. As with the Japan Rail Pass, these are open only to non-residents and must be bought outside Japan and before leaving. Travellers must also arrive and depart Japan by international flights. There is a limit of one pass per airline per person and visit, and there may be restrictions on travel with in peak holiday periods (March, mid-July to August, mid- December to early January).

the cheaper option, but travel

BY BUS
Highway buses (‘kosoku bus’) are
a viable alternative to trains for some journeys. Every prefecture and larger city is served by at
least one bus company; although buses are significantly slower than express trains, prices are much cheaper. Competition on popular routes, such as Tokyo-Nagoya-Kyoto- Osaka, makes fares even lower.
The journey from Tokyo to Kyoto, for example, takes eight hours, with average fares around ¥5,000.
BY TRAIN
Most of Japan’s vast and efficient rail network is run by Japan Railways
(JR). One of the fastest ways to travel is by shinkansen (bullet train), which travels at speeds of over 300km
per hour. Tickets can be purchased at JR reservation ‘Green Window’ desks or travel agents. In Tokyo,
call the JR East Infoline (050 2016 1603, 10am-6pm daily) for travel information in English. There are also lines run by other private rail companies, mainly in and around metropolitan areas. Some carriages are reserved seats only (and cost extra), but areas for unreserved seating are set aside on most trains.
CITY TRANSPORT
Japan’s major cities have some of the most efficient train and subway systems in the world. Services are fast, clean, safe, reliable and good value. Subway and train lines are colour-coded for easy navigation, and almost all stations have signs in English as well as signs telling you which exit to take. Subways and trains operate from 5am to around midnight (JR lines slightly later).
TICKETS AND PASSES
Standard single tickets can be
bought at automatic ticket machines at any station. Touch-screen ticket machines can display information in English. Transferring from one line to another, provided it is run by the same operator, will be covered by the price of your ticket. If you need to transfer from

JRPASS
The Japan Rail Pass (japanrailpass.net) provides for virtually unlimited travel on the entire national JR network, including shinkansen and all regular JR lines but excluding the Nozomi and Mizuhosuper-express shinkansen. It costs from ¥29,110 for seven days (14- and 21-day passes are also available). The JR Pass is available only to visitors from overseas travelling under the status of ‘temporary visitor’ (tourist), and must be purchased before coming to Japan. You buy an ‘exchange order’ abroad; it’s then changed into an actual pass on arrival in Japan.
JR East, which runs trains in and aroundTokyo, has its own version of the pass (www.jreast.co.jp/e/ eastpass/), which costs from ¥22,000 for five days. If you’re not intending to travel beyond the JR East area (Tokyo and the area to the north and east), this is a sensible choice. The same conditions apply.
JR Pass holders receive discounts of about ten percent off room
rates at JR Hotel Group hotels (Metropolitan and Mets hotel chains). A list of affiliated hotels

Most overseas flights arrive at Narita International Airport in Chiba, located about 60km east of central Tokyo and relatively well served by both rail and bus links to the city. KYOTO & OSAKA
● JR trains
The JR limited express Haruka train travels via Tennoji and Shin-Osaka stations and on to Kyoto; trains depart every half hour and the journey to Kyoto takes about 75 minutes (¥2,870). The JR rapid train (kaisoku) connects the airport with Tennoji
and Osaka stations (65 minutes, ¥1,060) before continuing to Kobe.
● Nankai trains
The private Nankai line offers three type soft rain service to Namba Station in central Osaka. The sleek Rapi:t α (alpha) train takes only 30 minutes, while the Rapi:t β (beta) takes 35 minutes (both cost ¥1,130). You can also take a cheaper,
ordinary Nankai Express to
Namba in 43 minutes (¥920).
● Bus
The Kansai Airport Transportation Enterprise’s limousine buses provide door-to-door service to major stations and hotels in Osaka (around ¥1,300 to the city centre). Another bus service,theOCAT Shuttle, travels to the Osaka City Air Terminal in central Osaka every 30 minutes and costs ¥1,000.

Just about 120 days ago, [[[Stellar.org]]] launched.
We received an unexpected amount of attention from people all around the world and have seen the code stretched to its limits. We want to share what we have learned and tell the stories of the people using [[[Stellar]]], so we will be doing a series of posts that walk us through this journey.
Chapter 1
What happens when you try to sign up the world
When we opened our doors on July 31, 2014, we had expected about 10,000 people in our first month. 10,000 people did show up — in eleven hours. By the end of our first month there were almost 1 million Facebook authentications. This huge flow of people took us by surprise and we had to rapidly adjust our focus to manage this change.
When we began [[[Stellar.org]]], one of our goals was to provide financial access to a wide and global audience. Here is a snapshot of [[[Stellar]]] users in the first month:
Of all these stats, there are three important takeaways:
1) [[[Stellar]]] reaches women.
Women are critical to commerce and financial inclusion, but women have not had a significant voice in the digital currency or financial tech communities. Globally, women are 20% less likely to have a formal financial account and women account for about 5% of bitcoin holders. [[[Stellar]]] has the potential to become an equalizer on both of these fields.
2) [[[Stellar]]] includes the developing world.
Usage of money is context-specific and local. Participation of local consumers and developers is integral to developing solutions that will work in a local context. The next billion people online will change the Internet. And, they will determine the future of money:
The next iteration of the world’s financial infrastructure will be stronger if the perspectives of the next billion are brought to the table directly by the next billion, for the next billion.
3) [[[Stellar]]] opens the door for people to digital currency.
Digital currency protocols thus far have been least accessible to non-technical users or those with the least access to money. Yet for these protocols to have a positive global impact, we must go further. [[[Stellar’s]]] educational programs have reached hundreds of thousands of new voices which is step one of this long journey.
These three stats paint a colorful picture of what the world of financial inclusion could look like in a few years’ time — and it will extend to more women and the Global South. The road to this future will not be easy or paved, but our goal is to make sure there are diverse stakeholders at the table.
The bumpy road: overcoming fraud
One of the challenges we expected to encounter was a certain level of fraudulent signups. This is typical and most prolific in the early days of these systems and will wane over time. Systems will always be subject to gaming attempts and we have the responsibility to monitor and respond.
We began experiencing a sharp increase in what we believed to be fraudulent signups in Month 2. (This is why the stats above are focused only on the first million people who signed up in our first month.) To counteract this, we researched specific usage patterns to adjust our spam detection algorithms.
Taking action and making progress
October
We deployed updates to block several variations of automated behavior we had discovered. This reduced what we believed to be fraudulent signups significantly, but these gains were short-lived as numbers began to creep up between each deployment.
November
We added a machine learning system. Additionally, we implemented a change to our email verification process aimed at providing extra security to users — this single change had the greatest impact as it added a new step and enhanced the integrity of the signup process. Together, these measures have now nearly eliminated what we believe to be fraudulent signups.
Good fraud prevention has its own issues
With this issue having been largely addressed, a new challenge arrived. Valid users are also being mistakenly blocked at higher rates with tighter security measures. Each verification step added to the signup process has also created more friction for authentic users. This is a delicate line and we will continue to test, learn and report.
Measuring the journey in friends, not miles
As part of our fraud detection user research, we reached out to people who used [[[Stellar]]]. We asked how and why they were using [[[Stellar]]]. What we learned significantly altered our assumptions. Through these stories, people gave us a peek into their vastly diverse lives, demonstrating there are more complex cultural implications with people and money than initially thought.
In our next few posts, we will be sharing some of these stories along with stories from our tech team — come walk this road with us.

Our engineers were so excited that Scanbot is the first Scanner App to offer a 2-way sync technology. This new sync reflects changes you made on any device in real-time in Scanbot. You can add, rename, edit or delete your scans on one device – your changes are automatically reflected on all your connected devices in a blink of an eye.
In addition, we drastically improved various aspects of the scanning experience: Thanks to a new grayscale and color filter, your scans look even more beautiful. Cropping has been refined, too. Scanbot lets you crop your scans as if a magnet would guide you to the edges that Scanbot has detected. Also, we have put a lot effort to increase speed and scan accuracy.
Last but not least we implemented a highly requested feature which adds more security for Scanbot Pro users. It is now possible to lock Scanbot with a passcode. Users owning an iPhone 5s or newer device can access Scanbot with Touch ID.
Scanbot for Android gets smart naming, updated core and supports more QR codes
Apart from our iOS app, Scanbot for Android has received exciting new features, too. First and foremost we finally integrated smart naming for our pro users. As on iOS it offers the combination of user created, pre-defined (time, year, month etc.) or location-related (street, country etc.) dynamic placeholders to simplify the automatic application of custom file names.

Veil is a musical instrument. Thin fabric spans in front of you; touch it, strum it, bend it, the fabric responds and generates a sound. A continuous feedback process happens between your movements and the simulated movements of the veil. Potential Investors should refer to the Private Placement Memorandum, the Limited Partnership Agreement, and the Subscription Agreement for a full explanation of the legal rights related to investing in the Fund.
Description of the General Partner
The West Group Partners will commit a substantial portion of their time to the Fund during the time period in which the Fund makes its investments.
Furthermore, the General Partner will have the sole right to determine when, and under what terms, the Fund will sell or realize gains or losses on Fund investments, including decisions as to structure of disposition.
In addition, the General Partner, or an affiliate (the “Management Company”), will conduct the day-to-day administration of the Fund's operations, identifying and structuring the Fund's investments, managing and overseeing the Fund's investments, communicating and reporting to the Limited Partners and similar activities.
Qualified investors may purchase Interests by executing the Limited Partnership Agreement and the Subscription Agreement, and by wiring funds at closing.
Limited Partners have no right to participate in the management of the Fund, to act for the Fund or to vote except as specifically provided under Delaware law or in the Limited Partnership Agreement.
Fund Size
The Fund is seeking investors committed in the aggregate to contribute ("Capital Commitments") $50 million to the Fund.
The General Partner retains the right to conduct a closing and admit investors as Limited Partners with capital commitments (including the capital commitments of the General Partner) of $25 million.
The General Partner may, in its discretion, reject any subscription that is tendered.
Closing
At closing, the investor will become a Limited Partner of the Fund and will enjoy rights and be subject to the obligations attendant to ownership of limited partnership interests.
An initial closing will be held as soon as the General Partner determines, in its sole discretion, that the Fund has obtained a sufficient amount of Capital Commitments to satisfy the Fund's investment objectives, provided that the General Partner will not hold an initial closing until at least $25 million of Capital Commitments have been subscribed.
Additional Capital Commitments may be added at subsequent closings for up to twelve months after the initial closing.
In the event that investors commit to the Fund subsequent to the initial closing, such incoming investors will be subject to additional payments further detailed in the Limited Partnership Agreement.
In addition to the foregoing, Limited Partners admitted to the Fund or increasing their interest in the Fund after the initial closing of the Fund may be precluded from sharing in Fund investments made prior to such later closing if the General Partner determines that sharing such investments would not be economically fair to the initial Limited Partners.
At the initial closing, Limited Partners will be obligated to contribute to the Fund an amount equal to up to 50% of their capital commitments.
It is anticipated that 100% of capital commitments will be drawn down within the first three years of the commitment period.
The term may be further extended by agreement between the General Partner and a 2/3 vote of Interests from the Limited Partners.
Expenses and Fees
A detailed explanation of expenses and fees can be found in the Private Placement Memorandum, the Limited Partnership Agreement and the Subscription Agreement.
Net income allocations for the Fund shall be first made among the Partners in proportion to their invested capital to offset any previous net losses.
Thereafter, Net Income is allocated seventy percent (70%) to the Partners and thirty percent (30%) to the General Partner in proportion to their invested capital; provided said thirty percent (30%) is allocated to the General Partner only after net income for these Fund investments reaches a minimum investment hurdle equal to a ten percent (10%) compounded annual rate of return on the Partners’ invested capital.
Net losses in connection with Fund investments shall be allocated first to reverse previously allocated net income and thereafter among the Partners in proportion to their Capital Percentages.
Income and disposition proceeds with respect to each individual investment in a portfolio property in the Fund shall be distributed separately for each such investment.
The Partners shall first receive back their proportionate capital contributions with respect to such separate investment.
The Limited Partners will receive audited annual financial statements and a management report with respect to each investment in the Partnership.
Additionally, Limited Partners will receive quarterly reports which will include a list of the Fund’s current investments and a schedule of investments made or disposed of in the preceding quarter.
