I think the 2nd "defensa" could refer both to the position in the field and to the defense of footbal as a sport.
I mean I would understand "defensas DE fútbol" as those playing in that position, while "defensas DEL fútbol" as those defending it or leaving it in a good place. anyway we could keep it like that in English.
