I'm having trouble with "advocaciones" as used in these sentences:
There have been other Proz threads about this but I don't feel any of the answers fit here. Any help would be welcome.

This is worth reading from p88 on http://books.google.ie/books?id=ZG1SRQ1YLg0C&pg=PA88
It seems to me that "devotion" is what is meant. In the case of the Virgin one sees phrases like "devoción a advocaciones marianas" i.e. to the titles of the Virgin (Our Lady of Sorrows etc). For some saints one also finds titles (Saint Isidro Labrador). But there are many untitled saints also listed.

Predilection
Another option: Out of the thousand of saints and versions of the virgin, stood out the Lady of Sorrows and Lady of Guadalupe and among the saints San Juan xxx.
This means that there was a particular predilection for these 3 and that predilection took root among the population that developed a strong devoutness over time...

And the predilection begins Inside the yearning deep As the soul has been marked with the sign of Christ And taken as His own...

: This is a different non-religious register. E.g Google "a predilection for"// I agree that linking devoción and advocaciones is unusual (but it seems to be what the context implies).

Festivals or Celebrations (specifically regarding religion/the Virgen Mary)
It's a practice regarding the various St.'s days and other kinds of religious festivals, so you could choose festival or celebration.

And another one:
http://www.portalmariano.com/Advocaciones.htm
It also can refer to "patrocinio" (see entries in the wiktionary entry and cross-check with DRAE which lists: 1. m. Título de una fiesta de la Virgen María, que se celebra en una de las domínicas de noviembre;
as well as 1. m.
or "tutela" of the saint itself, which is the 'protective authority' of the saint (DRAE)
but in the overall context "advocaciones religiosas" are days or periods of celebrations or festivals which remember a supposed miraculous event or apparition, especially celebrated at the specific church or location where the visitation or miracle supposedly occurred.
