I'm translating a clinical study on spirometry in preschoolers. One of the paragraphs explaining the variables being recorded has the following sentence:
"Para el control de calidad se registraron el volumen de extrapolación retrógrada (VER), el tiempo de expiración forzada (FET) y punto en el que termina el flujo espiratorio expresado como porcentaje del pico de flujo espiratorio."
Searching for the exact phrase "volumen de extrapolacion retrograda" yields maybe 10 results; "retrograde extrapolation volume" (my guess) yields 1 result.
My fairly comprehensive list of Spanish acronyms lists VER as "volumen espiratorio de reserva", which is quite different.
Is it possible that this was a mistake by the author?
If not what is the proper translation for this phrase?
Thanks in advance for the help.

A few examples:
The back extrapolated volume should be less than 150 mL or 5% of the FVC, whichever is greater.
http://www.spirxpert.com/performing7.htm
Apparently, it is generally abbreviated as 'BEV', although 'EV' is also used:
FEV(1) , FEV(0.5) , FVC, back-extrapolated volume (BEV), forced expiratory time (FET), number of acceptable maneuvers, and repeatability, were computed and the percentage of tests that met the quality criteria standards was calculated.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23401425
This time period before there is any change in volume is needed to calculate the back extrapolated volume (EV; see Start of test criteria section)

Here is an article about spirometry and on page 96 you can find an explanation of retrograde exptrapolation used in Forced Vital Capacity test procedure.

Maybe "expired" would be better than "exhaled".

Note from asker:
Thank you for looking into this. I decided in the end to go with the "back extrapolated volume" term. |
