French to English Law/Patents Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-) research prior to applying for patents - biochemical processes

"...ce procédé étant caracterisé par..."
This is always underlined in the text so assume there is a specific "patentese" term for the specific characteristics of a process (or product) included in a patent application. Can I use "characterized by" or "defined by" in English?
