I am trying be more specific Somebody asked this question in a forum and I didn t satisfied with answers, and I couldn't find the context that this sentence used. I guess it can be something like that "Drive your way through that Italy" .. Thanks
Caryl Swift Nov 27, 2006:
Yes - more information, please
David Moore (X) Nov 27, 2006:
I agree with Jonathan and Nancy; give us the question in which the phrase appears, or the scenario in which it is used, then we might be able to help.
NancyLynn Nov 27, 2006:
I agree with Jonathan - we need more context; without it, this phrase is like a fish out of water ;-)
Jonathan MacKerron Nov 27, 2006:
need some more information here, no way of knowing what this means as it stands...

drive across

Drive across Italy - find your way across Italy by driving, rather than say, going by train or flying

agree Caryl Swift : Yes - travel through Italy by car

neutral David Moore (X) : It's just not strong enough...

disagree Payam Fazli : In this case the speaker shouldn't have to say : Drive your way through THAT Italy...-- It should have read like : Drive your way through Italy

(Just try and) drive through

This should have been posted in the I - E pair, rather than here, then you would have all manner of answers from those who have actually driven in Italy.

The speaker is referring obliquely to the very difficulty of "driving through Italy", so although Nancy is not wrong, I'm afraid she's not got the emphasis the speaker gave the statement. I have driven IN Italy, between Rome to Naples a number of times, and believe me, it's "hell on wheels" - paritcularly in Naples, where they gave up on traffic lights long ago, so that's something like a traffic jam ten km in diameter...
Peer comment(s):

agree Robert Fox : Maybe reminiscent of the old cattle drives through the wild west!!

Or a stampede, perhaps??
