English term

single-width

English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
compressors

Single width cylindrical roller bearings are used at the inlet end of the rotors to carry part of the radial loads. Tapered roller bearings at the discharge end locate each rotor axially and carry all thrust loads and the remainder of the radial loads.

...cannot understand this expression, does it mean that there are two bearings and both are the same width, or does it mean that two surfaces on the bearings have the same width... or what?

See explanation below...

Well, as I read it, it just means that there is only ONE cylinder roller bearing on each shaft at this end, and that it is a 'single-width' type; quite what they mean by that, I'm not qualified to say. I can only assume it must mean that the bearing has just one ring of rollers (the type I'm most familiar with, but maybe there are others?). Unless maybe in the same equipment there are other types of bearings that might be, for example 'double-width'. It might simply refer to the thickness [in the sense of: along the length of the shaft] of the bearing --- not all roller bearings are necessarily very long, but maybe this company uses them in different sizes.
Whatever, I feel sure it should be 'single-width' as one adjective describing the bearing, rather than 'a single' 'width-bearing'

agree Gareth McMillan : Agree- normally called "roller bearing"- suspect text originates from typical DE overkill at some time in its evolution.

Thanks, Gareth! Yes, poor Elena often seems to get non-English English docs! Mind you, they may just be making a careful distinction between 'cylinder' and 'taper' rollers... a bit superfluous, though, as you say!
