English term

contibutes

English Other Energy / Power Generation
Does 'contribute' the right word to be used here?

In terms of time, the highest peak load occurs at 19.00 to 20.00. During that period of time, the household contributes 55% of the load, while the remainder comes from the industry sector.

Discussion

David Moore (X) May 27, 2005:
For Rita: Google "industrial sector": 649,000; "industry sector": 826,000. It's what I'd have put too - but then, I think "Industry sector" would be regarded as a compound noun?
RHELLER May 27, 2005:
industrial sector (industry is a noun)
Carmen Schultz May 27, 2005:
you are welcome!
Non-ProZ.com May 27, 2005:
okay thanks
Carmen Schultz May 27, 2005:
of time" is redundant, if you simply say "period" it implies the time factor

Note: The problem is as much the number of households as the verb.

Households account for

or the Household sector accounts for ....

If you really want the word "contributes,"

Either
households contribute

or

the household sector contributes

English term (edited): contributes

(as in "causes")

is perfectly acceptable in the context given.
David is also right, but personally I would avoid "takes up", because the demand from the households is actually CREATING the load...so they cannot then "take it up".
Peer comment(s):

agree Balasubramaniam L. : "contributes" and "comes from" are nicely balanced and are correct as the two "make up" the load.
