On the contrary, when women are at a competitive disadvantage, contraceptive risk-taking has a socially induced halo of functionality surrounding it, a halo of which women are often only subliminally aware.

外からの姿など対象の顕著な特徴に基づいて、対象のイマージュが概念化・創造されて、判断されます。「halo」(後光)は、判断の効果です。

比喩的に用いれば、「嵩」に訳すればいいと思いますが、「ハロー」のほうはよりも適切だろうかと思っております。

なお、心理学では、「ハロー効果」ということもありますね。
