Earlier: NEWS Gerfried Goschl K2-Expedition
After a forced march from more than 11 hours Gerfried Göschl, Hans and Georg Wenzl, as well as Kilian Volken reached camp 2 in 6700 m. The stage was very hard because the snow was deeply and every step costed much energy – more than expected. A moment of shock was the ***descent of an avalanche*** during the ascent to camp 2. But Gerfried an his comrades are fortunately in good condition and will go today to the camp 3 in 7350 m. An Update follows today evening.

The 2nd idea:
Note:
Translation Philosophy: Writer Orientation Approach, namely, Respect for what is supposed for the writer to intend to describe “a pair of contrastive movements” with a linguistically contrastive pair of words.”
As translator, I paid attention to what I suppose to be contrastive movements “upward” and “down ward”, and a linguistically contrastive pair of words “a-scent” and “de-scent.”
As a note, in my 1st translation, I simply presented “登攀” and “下山” with no linguistic contrast in Japanese.
As conclusion, in the 2nd idea, I observed two sets of contrasts, namely, a set of contrast in Movements the writer observed, “descent” and “ascent” and another set of Linguistically Contrastive Formation of two words, “a-scent” and “de-scent”, i. e. So translation of the whole sentence showing the two sets of such contrasts will be necessary.
In summary, the second idea had better be presented in the following manner: (チームと雪崩の) 上り vs. 下り, and, 雪崩が下ってきた。

(n.) Incursion; sudden attack; especially, hostile invasion from sea; -- often followed by upon or on; as, to make a descent upon the enemy. descentの言葉のイメージは上から下へ落ちるイメージと、何かが押し寄せてくるイメージもあります。

avalanche
(n.) A large mass or body of snow and ice sliding swiftly down a mountain side, or falling down a precipice.
(n.) A fall of earth, rocks, etc., similar to that of an avalanche of snow or ice.
(n.) A sudden, great, or irresistible descent or influx of anything.

http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?p=descent&stype=0&dtype=1 http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?p=avalanche&sty

In English—the varieties without "costed"—the "descent" is redundant. Avalanche don't fall up.
