English term

interior rock

English to Japanese Other Geology
"It is a land blessed with spectacular diversity where the deep reds of ancient interior rock formations contrast with the sparkling blue of the Indian and Southern Oceans."

This phrase is for tourist information of a certain place. Here, would anyone tell me what "interior rock" means?

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Thank you Kathy-sab and mulberryfield-san for your comments. Those are very helpful!
Minoru Kuwahara Sep 3, 2005:
thank's right, KathyT-san, if if it's in autralia, we'd think of ayers rock. if the phrase was "interior ancient rock formations", that would have been easier to read, though not sure. -
KathyT Sep 3, 2005:
eg. Uluru (Ayers Rock) is a deep red ancient inland (interior) rock formation.
KathyT Sep 3, 2005:
BTW, it is (ancient) "interior ROCK_FORMATIONS" that is important here, rather than simply 'interior rock'. Good luck!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "私は"interior rock"というのは地質学用語だと思い込んでこだわりすぎてしまったようです。が、確かにご指摘の通りここで強調すべきなのは色のコントラストかもしれません。貴重なご意見ありがとうございました。"

内陸部の岩石

I think it is rock found in the inland area, as contrasted with that in the ocean area.
Peer comment(s):

agree KathyT : Correct. [Interior: "3. Situated away from a coast or border; inland." from www.dictionary.com] Western Australiaのことを言っていると思います。 :-)

内部の岩石

I think "interior" means 「内部の」 and "rock" means 「岩石」.
And "ancient interior rock formations" totally means 「内部の古代岩石の形成物」
Peer comment(s):

neutral Minoru Kuwahara : without further context, this is just a guess work, but i agree, it may be just 'inner' (therefore, older) formations of the rock. so alternatively, 内側の... -

neutral KathyT : Although this is a perfect example of the contrast between the blue (ocean) and red (landscape), the 'red stuff' in the picture of the first link is unfortunately not rock but earth/sand. (I couldn't access your 2nd link.). :-)
