The designations D end (drive-end) and N end (non-drive end) are defined as follows:
The D end is the end of the machine at which the shaft extension or the thicker one of two shaft extensions is provided.
The direction of rotation is determined from this end of the machine. The opposite end of the machine is called the N end.

Međutim, mislim da primer (link) nema veze sa tim, tj. da je tu „end“ u smislu dela celog kompleta generatora (genset = engine + alternator (generator end) + control panel), a koji proizvodi električnu energiju:
