The Asynchronous System Trap (AST) is a fancy name for a subroutine that operates asynchronous to the mainline code of an application; a routine that activates in response to a timer or I/O completion or the granting of a resource lock.
The basis of an AST is literally just a standard subroutine within an application program.
Asynchronous system trap (AST) refers to a mechanism used in several computer operating systems designed by the former Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).
Various events within these systems can be optionally signalled back to the user processes via the AST mechanism. These ASTs act like subroutine calls but they are delivered asynchronously, that is, without any regard to the context of the main thread
