hypnotic / sedative

something that makes you somnolent... common root in English... we call them hypnotics if they are specifically used to induce sleep, or sedatives if this may just be a side effect of the primary calming effect.

As Eric mentions, the translation is dependent upon context. If the drug is one specifically intended to produce sleep as an effect, it's a hypnotic. Sedatives may produce sleep as a side effect. Given the description "grupa lijekova", "hypnotic" is the most immediately-applicable term, which is why I list it first.

agree Eric Bullington : Within the pharmaceutical industry, Mike's right. This class of drugs is typically translated as hypnotic or sedative depending on context.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Eric Bullington : Usually the term "soporific" is used to describe certain homeopathic drugs and nutritional supplements. I've never seen this term used in the context of a regulated drug product.

neutral Mike Gogulski : agree with Eric... "soporific" has passed out of medical usage for some reason, despite being lexically descriptive.
