German term

Selbstsicherung

German to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping
I'm working on some software relating to railways. The term "Sicherung/Selbstsicherung" comes up in several strings.

It relates to track workers being responsible for their own safety on tracks (see, for example: https://www.bgbau-medien.de/handlungshilfen_gb/daten/dguv/20...

I'm having trouble coming up with a concise way of conveying this in English. Since it relates to software strings, I only have a limited number of characters available - so the shorter the better.

Personal Track Safety (PTS) / Individual Working Alone (IWA)

"Personal track safety (PTS) is the qualification every worker needs before you can work on – or near – any line owned or managed by Network Rail."
https://vgcgroup.co.uk/about/hsqe/pts-personal-track-safety/

"This course is designed to train persons who have been nominated by their line manager/sponsor to enable them to attain the Individual Working Alone (IWA) competence. The IWA competence is required to be held by anyone who is required to work on or near the line on their own."
https://www.hsstraining.com/course/individual-working-alone/

Should work where 'Selbstsicherung' appears as a standalone term in your text.

The headline of your linked article would IMO benefit from rephrasing in EN:
Arbeiten ... unter Selbstsicherung > Working without a site warden
site warden or COSS (controller of site safety)

I'm not sure how a Roadway Worker in California might "use self-protection" against a moving train.

self-protection

SDTI also notes that its Roadway Worker On-Track Safety Plan (Plan) was approved by the FRA.50 SDTI is confident that if its Plan is followed every time, roadway worker incidents will be eliminated.51 Staff notes that SDTI’s Plan allows for Lone Workers but requires such single workers to be trained, qualified, and specially permitted to use self-protection.

Note from asker:
Thanks, but this has nothing to do with the concept of "self-locking" at the link you provided. As I mentioned in my original post, it is more about workers on train lines being responsible for implementing their own safety measures.
