French term

verrou quadricipital

French to English Medical Medical (general)
Hi all -

I am translating a prescription and treatment protocol for a patient who hurt her ACL in an accident.

I can't seem to find this term:
verrou quadricipital

Here is the context:
2 grandes poches réfrigérantes type Physiopack : glacer la partie douloureuse 20 à 30 minutes,
3 fois par jour (protéger la peau de la glace avec un linge).
PARACETAMOL 500 mg : 2 comprimés toutes les 6 heures si douleur (maximum 8 par jour) 2 boites.
Une attelle longue de genou (jusqu'au verrou quadricipital), en extension, articulable, pendant 21 jours

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Michael

Michael Barnett Oct 1, 2020:
@Sue Hi Sue. Have a look at a photo of the brace. They come in different lengths, so engaging the quadriceps gives an idea of how high on the thigh it should go.

Sue Davis Oct 1, 2020:
@Liz I don't quite see how engaging the quadriceps fits into the text.
Michael Barnett Oct 1, 2020:
@Liz Good job Liz. Enter it as an answer and you will get my "agree".
Suzie Withers Oct 1, 2020:
Liz's links look convincing to me
Sue Davis Oct 1, 2020:
perhaps until "locking in extension by quadriceps" is effective. This rather negates my earlier suggestion.

liz askew Oct 1, 2020:
Could it be "engaging the quadriceps"??

Michael Barnett Oct 1, 2020:
@Sue That is a great idea. What do you make of "jusqu'au"? It looked to me like it was indicating how high the brace was to fit, but, of course there is no anatomical position called a "quadriceps lock".
Suzie Withers Oct 1, 2020:
@Sue Yes, I've seen braces that have locking mechanisms at the thigh level, so perhaps it's something to do with that?
Sue Davis Oct 1, 2020:
This may refer to a brace that allows movement at the knee joint but locks it in extension during e.g. heel strike. See https://basko.com/pdf/8900900.pdf

During gait, the device locks just prior to heel strike for support during
stance and unlocks the knee at heel off in preparation for swing. This action is intended to mimic the normal physiologic action of the knee extensors. (i.e. quadriceps)

quadriceps (thigh muscle) lock

"2 large refrigerated pockets; (freeze) / chill the area of pain for 20 - 30 minutes; 3 times daily protect the skin from the ice with a cloth; take 2 paracetamol 500 mg each 6 hours if pain persists, maximum 8 tablets per day; a long knee brace (to the quadriceps (thigh muscle) lock, an articulated (linking) extension for 21 days."

A muscle 'lock' would be muscular tension, pain on extension and moving joint, a 'cramp' effect.
Note from asker:
Thanks Lisa - This seems right! Michael
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michael Barnett : I'm sorry Lisa, what is this "lock" thing? BTW, it's an articulated brace, meaning there is a movable joint, and it is positioned in extension, meaning the leg is extended (straight at the knee), not flexed.
