rastrillando

Discussion

Marie Wilson Oct 14, 2019:
I don't see why combing a ploughed field sounds any dafter than raking a ploughed field, which is what the source says. Unless the police are actually all out in the field with rakes, it amounts to the same. Combing is my choice, but other options work too.
Lester Tattersall Oct 14, 2019:
Like a joke @Robert
As I said, Robert, it's the wrong register for a police report and therefore sounds off. The sentence would be:
Police officers were conducting a search of the ploughed field..." ('plowed' for the US).
With "comb" it would end up as:
"Police officers were combing the ploughed field..."
That sounds almost like a joke.
In fact it reminds me of the old joke:
'A shipment of wigs was stolen yesterday from Liverpool docks. Police are combing the area. The suspects have vanished into thin hair.'
Anabell Lucero (asker) Oct 14, 2019:
The case is from Argentina and it is going to be sent to the United States
Robert Carter Oct 14, 2019:
@Lester That may be true in the UK, but this is perhaps from a Latin American country, and it doesn't mean you have to follow that policy even if you were translating it for the UK, which may not be the case. I can't think of any reason why using descriptive language would be a faux-pas, but that may be down to ignorance on my part. Can you give us a reason why you think it would be inappropriate?
Lester Tattersall Oct 13, 2019:
"Combing" is what they might use in a newspaper report, but not in an official police report - they'd use "conducting a search of" or "carrying out a search of".
Anabell Lucero (asker) Oct 12, 2019:
I thought of the word "combing" too, because in Spanish one can say: peinar la zona. It also has the sense of looking for.
Anabell Lucero (asker) Oct 12, 2019:
I'm sorry. I put "medical" because most of the text is about the autopsy and some other parts are about the crime scene. This part about "policía rastrillando" is the description of what the police had done before they found the bodies.
Maria Kisic Oct 12, 2019:
What do you want to change it to?
Marie Wilson Oct 12, 2019:
Agree with Cecilia, not medical. Somebody with editing powers can change it.
Cecilia Gowar Oct 12, 2019:
I do not think it should be posted as ¨medical¨but I do not know how to vote to change the field.
Maria Kisic Oct 12, 2019:
I meant rake not take
Maria Kisic Oct 12, 2019:
I meant rake not take
Maria Kisic Oct 12, 2019:
Hola! El campo arado me haría pensar en take... Pero en términos policiales, en cuanto a búsqueda, he visto usar la palabra "combing"
