French term

fenêtre-bandeau

4. The horizontal window. Together with the intermediate ceilings the supports form rectangular
openings in the façade through which light and air enter copiously. The window extends from support to support
and thus becomes a horizontal window. Stilted vertical windows consequently disappear, as do unpleasant
mullions. In this way, rooms are equably lit from wall to wall. Experiments have shown that a room thus lit has an
eight times stronger illumination than the same room lit by vertical windows with the same window area.
The whole history of architecture revolves exclusively around the wall apertures. Through use of the
horizontal window reinforced concrete suddenly provides the possibility of maximum illumination.

Another way of translating it that I have seen is 'ribbon window'.

This large opening (seen in a full-scale interior at MoMA, one of four from the exhibition), in particular, presages the ribbon window of Le Corbusier's Five Points. Small openings prevailed in much of the house, but the liberation of windows from structural exterior walls would have allowed for even large openings.

Thanks, Phil
agree B D Finch : I prefer the term "ribbon window", which is more distinctive and better describes this type of window.

Thanks, Barbara./Yes, I prefer it too, though thought it best to record the more commonly used phrase as well.

agree Charles Davis : "Ribbon" is common for this in English / Agreed; either would do equally well. On balance I would go with "horizontal", as you have.

Thanks, Charles; I see both used synonymously, so wouldn't make too much of a song and dance about it.
