Discussion

Francois Boye Apr 14, 2016:
Response to Natacha Hassan: you did not read the following in Investopedia:

'Technical analysts make an important distinction between retracements and reversals. Retracements are short-term changes within a longer-term trend, while reversals indicate the end of a larger trend and the beginning of a new trend. When a retracement first begins, it is difficult to tell whether it is a retracement or a reversal. Technical analysts try to distinguish between the two using Fibonacci retracements, pivot point support and resistance levels, and trendline support and resistance levels'

Chakib Roula Apr 2, 2016:

http://www.zonebourse.com/formation/Les-retracements-et-spee...

Votre premier document joint le dit bien.// See my discussion entry.

The markets' previous uptick did not result in a new upward trend; on the contrary, that uptick is corrected downwards by a return to an initial, upward trend.

As said in the attachment, the case above is different from a reversal. In the latter case, the market moves downwards from an upward trend to an initial, upward trend. It is the case of a correction of trend.

recul

retracing means here reversing its trend, but temporarily. Not as a general downward trend

A reversal is a radical shift = inversion (de la courbe)
A retracement is a temporary reversal = recul, repli (retracing your steps = reculer)
Example sentence:

Dow Jones has retraced after reaching the technical targets at 16920.00.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Francois Boye : incorrect! A retracing is not a reversal. See the Investopedia attachment above.//See my discussion entry

Investopedia "A retracement is a temporary reversal in the direction of a stock's price that goes against the prevailing trend." Please explain how Investopedia is not stating that a retracement is a temporary reversal. "Temporary" is important here.
