This is used in an interview of a Spanish football player:
sé que no ha sido mi mejor temporada, pero bueno, veremos la siguiente, esperemos hacerlo con una buena pretemporada y estar en plena forma para poder rendir al máximo el día D, ¿no?
I don't want to say "D-Day" since English-speaking people associate this with the Normandy Invasion.
Any other ideas?

"D-Day" could also be used in my opinion; it's also become used as the Big Day, for the occurrence of any very significant or impactful planned event.

: I like "when the season kicks off", although there might be a need to avoid too many uses of "season" in the same sentence given what comes before the D-Day part in the source?.

D-Day
In a soccer context, I don't think anyone would ever confuse this with the Normandy Invasion.

: you know I think that's on the button and the war won't come into it ... thought about it too and indeed why not :)

: David - If the text refers to football/soccer, what about the Palestinian campaign to expel Israel from FIFA? That's more than a perfect example of "war coming into it".

when the campaign kicks off
I thought of "on the big day", but I don't think it's clear enough. What he must mean by "D day" here is the first day of the league season, when winning or losing really matters.
My suggestion is a reasonably common cliche in the UK, at least, and combines military and soccer motifs (campaign, kick off) in a way that I think is in the spirit of what this player is saying.
"Joao Teixeira is being tipped to have an impressive season with Liverpool when the campaign kicks off next month."

"We have a great spirit about us, we've signed some good players and hopefully if we can hit the ground running when the campaign kicks off then we can find that momentum"

I'm inclined to agree with you about "D-day"; I just can't imagine an English-speaking footballer (or football journalist) saying it.

: I agree that it's better to translate the meaning here rather than try to hold on to the D-Day metaphor, which I don't think will come across well in English. Personally I might go with something like "from the very first match".

: I was going to answer the same thing, then I looked down and saw you already had. I think it's very close to "D-day" without using that phrase, as per asker's instructions.
