Source text - English Like any hot-blooded superdork, I love a good portmanteau. Few things make me more disconcertingly happy than the combining of two words into an especially clever new one. It's an art, really. Mockumentary? A classic portmanteau. Automobills? I don't know which of Destiny's Children came up with that, but she's a genius. But not all portmanteaus are good portmanteaus. Foundcealer? Not a good portmanteau. But that doesn't mean Tarte's latest launch in and of itself isn't good. In fact, it's pretty awesome.
Aside from not really rolling off the tongue with ease, the name Foundcealer implies a foundation-concealer hybrid, which isn't entirely accurate and definitely doesn't paint a complete picture of this exciting new product. The product's full name, Babassu Foundcealer Vegan Skincare Foundation SPF 20, clarifies things a bit, but it still doesn't tell you just how special this versatile new foundation is.
I initially guessed, because of the "-cealer" aspect of the name, that Tarte had created a foundation so full-coverage that it rendered concealer unnecessary. In actuality, Foundcealer provides light-to-medium, buildable, customizable coverage. The brand recommends applying it with your fingers for the lightest coverage, with a brush for medium coverage, and with a sponge for something in between. But no matter what you choose, it's doing a whole lot more than just sitting pretty on your face. Beyond providing an "ultra-comfortable, natural, radiant finish," Tarte promises that Founcealer also functions as a skin-care product. In addition to hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, it features the titular babassu, a "superbalm" from the rainforest with nourishing, moisturizing, and soothing properties. The brand says users who tested it out reported that fine lines looked less apparent in under two weeks, and thanks to titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, the formula helps prevent additional signs of sun damage.
Translation - Korean 요즘 세대 사람들이 모두 그렇듯, 저 역시 재미있는 합성어를 좋아해요. 두 단어를 똑똑하게 조합해서 한 단어로 만들어내는 것 만큼 절 행복하게 하는 건 별로 없죠. 진심으로, 합성어는 거의 예술작품이예요. 귀차니즘 같은 합성어는 이미 고전이죠. 맥세권이라는 합성어는 누가 만들었는지는 몰라도 천재가 분명해요. 하지만 모든 합성어들이 좋은 합성어는 아니죠. 파운실러? 너무 별로잖아요. 하지만 이 이름이 별로라고 해서 타르트의 최신 제품도 별로라는 건 전혀 아니예요. 사실, 이 제품은 꽤나 놀라운 제품이예요.
발음하기도 어려운 파운실러라는 이름은 파운데이션과 컨실러가 혼합 된 제품이라는 점을 암시해주긴 하죠. 하지만 그것 만으로는 이 제품을 정확하게 묘사해 주지도 못할 뿐더러 이 제품의 효능을 완전히 설명해 주지도 못해요. 이 제품의 풀네임인 ‘바바수 파운실러 비건 스킨케어 파운데이션 SPF 20’은 그나마 조금 낫지만 여전히 이 파운데이션이 얼마나 만능인지, 또 얼마나 특별한지는 여전히 제대로 설명해주지 못해요.
처음에는 “컨실러”라는 부분 때문에 타르트가 컨실러가 필요없는 완벽한 커버를 구현하는 파운데이션을 만들어냈구나, 하고 추측했어요. 하지만 실은, 파운실러는 가벼운 커버력에서부터 중간 정도의 커버력까지, 원하는 만큼 쌓아 올려서 표현할 수 있는 커버리지를 가지고 있어요. 타르트는 가벼운 커버력을 위해서는 손가락을 사용하기를 추천하고, 중간 정도의 커버를 위해서는 브러쉬를, 그 사이 단계 정도의 커버를 위해서는 스폰지를 추천하죠. 하지만 무엇을 사용해서 바르든, 이 제품은 단순히 여러분의 얼굴 위에 예쁘게 얹어져 있는 데에서 끝나지 않아요. “매우 편안하고 자연스러우면서 광채가 나는 피부 표현”에서 끝나는 것이 아니라 스킨케어 효능까지도 선사하죠. 히알루론산과 비타민 E에 더해, 열대우림에서 얻어낸 “슈퍼밤”인 티튤라 바바수가 첨가되어 피부에 영양과 수분을 공급하고 피부를 진정시켜요. 타르트에 따르면, 이 제품을 사용한 고객들이 2주 안에 미세라인이 덜 부각되는 효과를 봤다는 리뷰를 남겼고, 티타늄다이옥사이드와 징크옥사이드 포뮬라가 햇빛으로 인한 손상을 막아준다고 하네요.

Source text - English I think hard times are coming when we will be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now and can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine some real grounds for hope. We will need writers who can remember freedom. Poets, visionaries, the realists of a larger reality.
Right now, I think we need writers who know the difference between the production of a market commodity and the practice of an art. Developing written material to suit sales strategies in order to maximize corporate profit and advertising revenue is not quite the same thing as responsible book publishing or authorship.
Yet I see sales departments given control over editorial. I see my own publishers in a silly panic of ignorance and greed, charging public libraries for an ebook six or seven times more than they charge customers. We just saw a profiteer try to punish a publisher for disobedience and writers threatened by corporate fatwa, and I see a lot of us - the producers who write the books, and make the books - accepting this. Letting commodity profiteers sell us like deodorant, and tell us what to publish and what to write.
