Show somebody the symbol of an upside-down cross and you can get different reactions.
Today, the obligation to attend football practice or dance lessons is often taken more seriously than Sunday worship or religious education in American culture. Consequently, in our society the upside down cross gets its meaning not from religious practice but from B-grade horror movies like "The Omen" where the inverted cross is anti-Christian or satanic.
The truth is, it is, and was, a common Christian symbol long before heavy metal bands or B-rated horror films took it over. Traditionally in Christianity, it was a reference to Saint Peter who died crucified upside down in the city of Rome. Indeed, in one church I attended named Saint Peter's, the doors of the church had handles that were inverted crosses - the symbol of its Patron Saint.
Some accounts say that Saint Peter asked to be crucified upside down because he said he was not worthy to die in the same way as his Lord. Another account says the inverted crucifixion was a further humiliation imposed upon him by Roman Authorities. It is said that Saint Peter's response was "Now at last I will be able to see the World as other men see it... upside down."
In the past I know I saw, at mass, a father and son who had their own playful rite for the sign of peace. Whenever I would say "Let us offer each other the sign of peace, " he would quickly turn to his toddler son who was standing in a pew and grab him by the ankles and turn him upside down to the child's great delight. Now - liturgists would probably disapprove and I am NOT recommending that but I sometimes thought of Saint Peter's comment when I'd see that.
Being a baptized Christian is all about seeing things "Right-Side-Up" in an "Upside-Down World." In all the Gospels, John the Baptist says: "One mightier than I, is coming after me" and "He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." In the Baptism of Jesus, the Spirit descends like a dove and Jesus is proclaimed to be God's "Beloved Son, in whom He is well pleased." There is a sense in which the Father says that about each one of us at our Baptism when for most of us our parents and godparents promised God that they would be the first educators of these children in the ways of faith (And if we are parents or godparents we might do a reality check on how well we are doing in keeping that promise.)
In the Acts of the Apostles Jesus tells His disciples to wait because there is One who is coming " after Him" - the Holy Spirit. That same Spirit that descended on Jesus at His baptism descends upon us at our baptism and confirmation.
That same Spirit is given in a Special way to me and other ordained priests at our ordination to empower us to celebrate the Eucharist for you. (By the way - that is why in the liturgy your response is not just "And also with you" but "And with your Spirit" (Et cum spiritu tuo!) it's not just Casey Mahone you are responding to but you are acknowledging, particularly, the Spirit, given in Priestly Ordination-that same Spirit is the One who consecrates Bread and Wine to become the Body and Blood of the Lord, whether Casey Mahone is in a state of Grace or not.)
There is a great deal in this world that is broken, that is people often see life, reality, and morality upside-down. Christians are called to learn to see that upside-down world right side up. Life will always be a little awkward for us because we are trying to live right side up in an upside-down world. We are meant for Heaven and we pray that God's will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. But always remember: "this ain't Heaven."
May the Holy Eucharist and the Grace of Baptism help us all to live and bear witness as Saint Peter did -learning to live and see: "Right Side Up in an Upside-Down World."
