Most of the people here, especially those recounting previous decades and centuries, have managed to achieve some degree of success.

With the exception of the occasional struggling newbie or slowly failing veteran, you won't get much feedback from the unsuccessful here. They simply moved on to other things.

So: YMMV.

I carried on part time on other freelance jobs I had until I had plenty of freelance translation jobs, at which point I concentrated on that. I can't see many people saving 2 years'worth of living cash before taking the plunge.

in my opinion, it s completely irrelevant to draw any conclusions from personal experiences dating back to the previous decades and or centuries. The translation landscape has changed a lot in the last few years.
