2. dish it out. Dispense abuse or punishment, as in He can dish it out with the best of them, but he can't take it. [Slang; c. 1930]

| | | Jason Ma China Local time: 00:34 English to Chinese + ... killing you softly with... | May 28, 2007 |

Well, something to that effect.
I found it hard to come up with a better version than David's.

Well, Martin, "One tough female" typically refers to a strong-willed woman. It has more to do with a woman's unyielding personality or mental tenacity rather than her physical attributes. For example in the 2nd link below, someone could be short and petite in stature yet still tough as nails.

Hard, but fair - everyone acknowledges she also has a well of compassion that other soldiers draw inspiration from.
"She is awesome," Spc. Rosa Elmore said. "She is our mom, and she is one tough female. She corrects, but she praises."
Boissy can be taciturn and doesn't share her philosophies, but as one of the combat veterans of a unit peppered with combat veterans, she carries her responsibility with a seriousness born of experience.
"I promised I would bring them all back," Boissy said. "It's a promise I work every day to keep."

If you enjoy a good mystery, a tough female character with an attitude, spiced with creatures that only exist in the realms of fantasy, Anita Blake is what you have been searching for.
In the Anita Blake, Vamipe Hunter (ABVH) series, Laurell K Hamilton has created a fanatsy world filled with vampires, magic, shapeshifters, witches, and all things supernatural. I absolutely love it.
Anita is a tough as nails vampire slayer and an animator. She is short, petite, and can damn well take care of herself. She gets into more than her fair share of danger in her line of work.

pk,
IMHO, just like the tough traits of a "tough female", 辣妹子之辣 also refers more to the attitudinal characteristics of a clever and strong-willed woman - the combination of quick wit, determination, and feistiness if you will.

Thanks for the clip pk, that's refreshing from all that business talk.
Maybe I believe my eyes more than my ears. Her picture here seems more attractive to me than her song. I find it hard to enjoy the music. I mean I don't really understand the rhythm of the music, nor could I relate her constant swinging from side to side to the hotness of chilies or her being hot in whatever way. It sounds more like a work song of a production team during the Cultural Revolution, racing to build a reservoir of some kind, a typical "revolutionary" tune. I am surprised such style survives to this day. I like the 刘三姐 she sang a few months earlier, when she did not even have to swing.
On the American version of 辣妹子, many parts of her body do shape like jalapeno peppers with that shiny skin and fully rounded quality. Jalapenos are incredibly hot too.
Comments are cheap but in a world where everything else is cheap being cheap is the secret is it not?
So here is another comment for the last picture: The 金花(or金龙) on her T-shirt reminds me of an article I was translating just last month, mentioning bound-feet or 3-inch golden lilies (三寸金莲) and it is such a contrast to the tough girls pictured here. Happy for the freedom Chinese females have gained since my grandma's time, but something that they used to have has been lost when they gained what they have now. I remember trying to buy a suitable pair for my grandma while being a student in Hangzhou and only the 边福茂 Shoe Store still carried those in the late 1970s. I wonder by the time most people have cars in China, if the women there are going drive faster than most men do, like people do in this country. If they end up like this one, I am certain that few guys want to get his ball whacked like that, no matter how hot she gets.
Martin,
Thank you for your encouraging comment. Mine is half joking though. If it IS going to be used for a restaurant, Steve's version is certainly far better. Because with mine you have no clue as to what type of business they are doing.

Thanks, David. I truly doubt any of us was that serious to start out with, including Yueyin himself. Some things are so culture-specific, that it takes more than a language transform to get the meaning across.
IMHO, there are situations where an attempt of a literal translation would only leave the audience of a different culture going "huh?". There's simply too much cultural background to be conveyed in one or two short sentences without having to resort to footnotes.
