No Feb 10

During the pandemic, I came to loathe video calls. At its height, I "met" with personal friends online to share a beer, which was horrible and borderline traumatizing. A real-world meeting with colleagues on the other hand? Anytime.

I totally get this. I feel very self-conscious on video calls.

The idea here (which is actually mine) is not to sit there for hours desperately making painful small talk, but more just to get to say hello to people, get a feel for them, see their faces, hear their voices, and make a personal connection, however superficial.

This might help reduce friction.

My partner spends half the day every day in zoom meetings and says you just get used to it after a while. It can’t replace face to face, but it’s the only practical solution for members spread around the world.

Done right, I think it would be fun. I would never go to a conference ORL or online (cost, content, time) but it’d be great to meet some of the people I’ve been sparring/chatting/joking with for a decade or more.

Keep it real Feb 10

I completely agree with Alex. With colleagues or just with anyone in the real-world, as long as he/she is a nice person.

What is the interest in getting a feel for people, unless you are going to collaborate with them in a specific project or something like that? (and those are very rare and specific cases)

Besides, the WHO says electronic coffee is very unhealthy & should be avoided like the plague...

Coffee hours Feb 10

Some translator associations have monthly coffee hours where anyone who wants to, just join via Zoom and chat about a topic or about how everyone is doing. I just wonder how this would work for ProZ.com... what if 100 people join the call. That's not going to be very productive. It will basically become a talkshow with the loudest people talking and the rest enjoying the show.

That could be instructive in itself…

There would need to be several but I don’t think there is much chance of 100 turning up given time zones, workloads, social anxieties, curmudgeonlinesses and so on.

Not for everyone Feb 10

The most active forum members interact almost daily. We all have a picture of each other, I should think. It would be interesting to see if X is really as positive or Y really as negative…

But obviously it wouldn’t be for everyone.
