I failed the IoL DipTrans and would like your opinion on how I should proceed. I am currently working as a part-time translator and my employer seems pleased with my work (he gave me an excellent reference as part of my application for ITI) which makes me think all is not lost. However I still believe I need additional training. I live in Glasgow and there are no good translation in the area so my options are (correct me if I am wrong) finding another DipTrans preparation course (I was not very ... I live in Glasgow and there are no good translation in the area so my options are (correct me if I am wrong) finding another DipTrans preparation course (I was not very impressed with the one I did nor does it appear I was successful preparing on my own), doing courses in my would-be specialisations of business and legal translation; possibly with a view to re-sitting the Diploma, or doing an MA in translation. I´m sorry to hear you failed the test, but it´s good to see you keep a possitive attitude towards training... keep going forward!!
There is a site called lexicool.com where you can find information about translation courses, you might want to check on it.

I did it, for German into English. You do past papers, and they are marked at length by a very helpful tutor, who also gives you telephone tuition sometimes. I would recommend that course.

I've done modules for Dutch to English and Portuguese to English through City. Both tutors were very good, certainly knew their stuff and were also very supportive. Depending on the tutor, you can also do one or more old papers under exam conditions, which really helps.
City also offers a MA in Legal Translation (by distance learning with some limited compulsory attendance), but I'd advise re-sitting the Dip Trans again first. Many competent translators fail on their first attempt, so try not to be disheartened. Remember it is very different writing under exam conditions, on a cold January day, with pen and paper and no Internet access.

I have contacted City University about doing module 3 of their DipTrans preparation course. Is this suitable for someone who already has experience of sitting the exam?
One of my fellow candidates told me that you can pay IoL for information about why you failed. Do any of you know about this? There was no information with my results and I have tried contacting IoL to no avail.

How about the 'checking' side of it ...? I hope you don't mind but I noticed a mistake in your profile ...
BTW I failed Naati first time round, and had to resit the following year. I think I failed mainly due to the two different scripts, one familiar, one unfamiliar, and consequent poor time management ... For Naati you have to pass the Ethics section, so you need to swot it up.

I don't know whether you can pay to get information about why you failed the exam or not, but if there's a fee involved, I wouldn't doubt it.
When it comes to charging for lifting a finger, the IOL is first in line. When it comes to showing the slightest bit of professional responsibility, they're nowhere to be found. When I tried to get in contact with them a few years ago it was absolutely impossible (repeated emails and phone calls simply unanswered) but they always managed to efficiently collect the fees for exams. If they were a private company they would have put themselves out of business long ago. They've got to be one of the biggest scams in the translation industry.
I'd seriously consider Astrid's and Lawyer-Linguist's advice. They're both smart cookies and are worth listening to.

I'd say it's the ideal module to take because it is the one specifically geared to exam preparation. If possible, take the full module -- that will give you eight old exam papers to do with feedback. The half module is cheaper, obviously, but then you only have four old papers, which probably isn't enough for the tutor to really get to know you and the areas you might specifically need to concentrate on. With the full module, you also have two telephone tutorials. If you don't want to have a telephone tutorial, you can always opt to do it by email.
I don't know whether you need to resit all three IoL papers, but supposing you only need to sit General and one semi-specialised paper (for instance), you can always discuss with your tutor which ones you want to concentrate on, so that you don't waste time working on papers from the other semi-specialised group.

I don't think this information is correct, at least I've never seen any mention of this in the rules. I think what you can pay for is for one or more of your papers to be remarked, although I think you would need to apply for that pretty quickly after receiving your results. Perhaps when the paper is remarked, they do provide some feedback if you don't pass again, but I don't know for sure.

PS: Just thought of something -- if you decide to do the City module, ask the tutor to specifically include the paper(s) you failed as part of the eight for the module. That way -- although your translation for him/her will obviously differ slightly a second time round -- you'll get the feedback you are looking for without paying any extra to IOL (unless you are convinced you should have passed and then the remark route is possibly the way to go). The City tutors I've dealt with are very flexible, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a problem. You could always phone and ask City first so they can check the specific tutor will be obliging -- unlike some, they do answer their phones/e-mails
