Practically every conscript in the Norwegian military is offered the chance to prolong the mandatory service through a period of enlistment, or verving, where the pay goes up from the conscripts' minimal beer-a-day pay to a salary. Not much else is different, and the enlisted could still hold the lowest rank there is, such as private. He or she could even be a ranking officer. In this case, the enlisted soldier on duty (as opposed to the conscript on duty) reports directly to the duty engineer (on the duty team - i vaktkvarteret).
