Malay term

persekutuan

Malay to English Other Other
This appears in Malaysian birth certificates, under 'lain2 jenis pengenalan bapa' and 'lain2 jenis pengenalan ibu', i.e. this space is filled in with 'persekutuan'. What does this mean and how do I translate this?

Thanks.

Discussion

ajali Aug 27, 2004:
So 'persekutuan" here is a short form in reference for "only name/names registered in "persekutuan".
ajali Aug 27, 2004:
However, because there are people who have lived in other part of the world and have different name.....like let say married a European and registered her name with her husband last name like Rashidah Brown for example, it did not apply in Malaysia.
ajali Aug 27, 2004:
I think because Birth Certificate is a legal document, whatever is filled in the certificate take law into account. Normally, when we fill a form, we will put a dash (-) or Nil. In this case, it mean "no other name in "persekutuan".
Non-ProZ.com Aug 27, 2004:
Sorry, I meant the word 'persekutuan' is handwritten.
Non-ProZ.com Aug 27, 2004:
Thanks Ajaji for your explanation, but actually, the word 'federal' here is handwritten inside both the spaces (boxes) provided for 'lain2 jenis pengenalan bapa' and likewise for 'ibu', so I'm wondering how 'persekutuan' is a form of identification. i.e. Lain2 jenis pengenalan bapa: PERSEKUTUAN.

federation [sic]

mona,

"federation [sic]" -- meaning i.e. 'intentionally so written, to indicate that translation exactly reproduces the original'.

- that is how the rendering should be. in as far as you as the translator is concerned, there is no need to speculate. in fact one shouldn't assume meaning in such vague cases.

- in translating legal documents, the responsibility of the translator is to reproduce the original as closely as possible. for example, if something cannot be read, you put [illegible] right after the text.

\"...you put [illegible] right after the text.\"

should read

\"...you put [illegible] where the unreadable text should be.\"

sorry!

alliance OR federation

I know that 'persekutuan' by itself, is 'alliance' or 'federation' i.e. 'a group of people or organizations that have banded together for their common good' but i don't know why this is being used on a birth certificate. HTH.

Federation

In the old Birth Certificate that I have.........It is stated Form A. Federation of Malaya........So, I think under the same The births and death Registration Ordinance, 1957 [section 14; Rule 7], I think the same word apply........"federation" and not ""federal" as in "Wilayah Persekutuan"
I think it mean, do the father/mother has any different name registered in "persekutuan tanah melayu", of course its Malaysia now.

Interesting..........Since I have never work in the Register Office, I can only guess.........Suppose to be written as \"Non\" or \"the same\". Something to that effect. Probably it is a standard answer....So, I still think \"persekutuan\" here mean \"federation\". Is there any other name in the \"federation\".........I don\'t think it mean alliance or hubungan or something to that effect. Just think of this: If you have two names \"Ramona\" and \"Mona\". Both are registered in the federation.......then your baby\'s certificate will be filled with both names. If you only have one.........then, the other should be non, nil.

So, \"persekutuan\" here mean \"federation\". In other words, it mean, Nil or no other name in the federation.
