The full phrase is:「特に変化球を思うように操れず、私が見た試合でも引っかけたり、抜けたり、叩きつけたりと苦労していた。」
It's part of a news article reporting the advice given by an older player to a newer player.
Some things I've read suggest it could be something like "hitching" or "clinging" (not letting the ball go smoothly), others gave me the impression that it might be "going wide", so any insight would be much appreciated!

I checked with my Japanese wife, she thinks it might be a "bunt" more than a tipped hit. Either way it is a form of glancing hit.
