「初耳」何年前だろう。都心のデパートで背広を買い配送を頼むと、伝票を手にした女性店員が「お名前様ちょうだいします」。一瞬耳を疑った。その後も「お名前様」聞くたび不快になる。丁寧なつもりだろうが、過ぎたるは...。

スポーツクラブで手続を済ませジムに入ろうとしたら受付むすめがにこやかに「行ってらっしゃいませ」。公立博物館でも展示場の入り口で係りの女性が「行ってらっしゃいませ」。思わず「旅に出るわけじゃあるまいし」と言いそうになった。いちいち気にする方が悪いのか。そうではないだろう。心強い調査がでた。

It sound like the protagonist one one hand gets annoyed when people speak to him using over polite language, and on the other, uses these experiences to build up a picture that helps him understand something. The final three source sentences could read as "maybe it was worse to pay so much attention each time. Or maybe not; I had made some encouraging findings."
Of course the register of this example would need to be adapted to fit in with your existing translation, but I think that's what the author is trying to say.
