Japanese term

...〜のおそらくは...

Japanese to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Coincidence
Well, this appears to be the last of it, as Tsurumi Shunsuke and I will soon be parting ways indefinitely. This sentence was taken from his book's afterword on pages 286-7.

「戦争の中にいる時、戦争時代の日本をとらえることが難しかったように、高度経済成長の時代のおそらくは末期に今いる私にとってこの時代をとらえることは難しい。」

Reading into this sentence the discussion that preceded it, Tsurumi appears to be stating that it has (probably) been just as difficult for him to penetrate the Japanese mind during the period of economic high growth, as it was for him to have done so during the war, for in both times he was not only an observer, but also a participant.

Have I captured the correct meaning of おそらく here? Does it mean "probably", as I have interpreted it to mean? If so can someone provide a grammatical interpretation of what is going on?

Discussion

Roddy Stegemann (asker) Feb 21, 2010:
Reemphasis: If we can agree on my interpretation of the word's meaning, then I am looking for a grammatical interpretation of its use -- not a translation of the sentence. Notice that I did not write: ..おそらく..

what is perhaps

The は here emphasizes "perhaps" and does not terminate the noun clause that is being modified, namely "高度経済成長の時代の末期".

高度経済成長の時代: era of high economic growth
のおそらくは末期 : what is perhaps the last stage of
に今いる私 : I who am now in

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I would like to thank everyone for their contribution. Certainly Yakugo and Shingi did the most to render clear what is going on in this sentence. Historically speaking, Yakugo appears to have provided the best grammatical interpretation, as the height of the high-growth period had already past by the time Tsurumi's work came into print, and it was not clear what would follow. It is for this reason that I am awarding the points to Yakugo. Paul has quite an imagination, doesn't he? I am surprised that Humbird has not already downgraded my entry to non-Pro, though. After all, according to her the writing style is "typical" of "pedantic scholars". Humor aside, Tsurumi is a very balanced and thoughtful author with many interesting notions about Japanese culture and how it is interpreted by both Japanese and non-Japanese, and I am happy that I chose his work. Simply, his use of Japanese grammar is very challenging, and it greatly slowed my ability to achieve an accurate reading. I am not eager to do it again."

This may be an unusual usage but look on it like this.

If I make a statement about the period of economic high growth using おそらく then the English would be ...

Probably [statement]

Consider the number of 'statements' that can be made with probably about the period of economic high growth then as a group those statements are "The probablies of the period of economic high growth". I think that would probably be acceptable as a literary device.

So what he's saying could be paraphrased as
Just as it was difficult to understand the Japan of the war while in the war so it is difficult for him, in the end of that period, to know the things that were probably true of the period of economic high growth.
