Japanese term

噛み付き

Japanese to English Science Livestock / Animal Husbandry
this term appears in a chart showing "異常産子率", I've just guessed it might indicate a piglet that bites itself.
Can you help me to find the appropriate term in English for this word?
Thank you so much!

sorry to do this again. reference to my answer: http://www.pref.nagasaki.jp/shokuniku/wakutin4.htm
shows the stress response to vaccination of the mother pig. (and possible causes of abnormal births)

yonedatransterp Feb 1, 2010:
oops. a little more I believe it is the mother biting the child from stress. Not the piglets. stressed piglets simply die, and don't tend to do things that aggressive.
yonedatransterp Feb 1, 2010:
what? biting? Pigs tend to bite tails under stress. At least, that what they teach at the vet school. OK, so from what I've gathered from the question, 異常産子率 and biting doesn't really fit, but thats besides the point.
Comparing abnormal birthrates (deformities and stillbirths) with post-birth stress such as crushing and biting is a bit.. questionable. oh. your translation is also mistaken.

白子is not albinos. They are stillborns that die late in the gestation period. They end up looking white. 黒子 is an early term stillborn that comes out looking mummified and black.

yes. 噛み付き refers to the biting as a sign of stress in response to the application of origo sacchirides in the feed. Fix your other translations though :D

the chart shows the abnormalities found in piglet before and after using isomalto-Origo saccharide, it lists all the abnormalities as follows:
(In Japanese):
1. 噛み付き
2.圧死(crushing to death)
3. 奇形(DEFORMITY)
4. 白子(ALBINO)
5. 黒子(?)

I think you may be right. This abstract (in English) suggests that tail biting is related to poor nutrition, low growth rate, and below average weight:

http://www.cababstractsplus.org/abstracts/Abstract.aspx?AcNo...

That seems connected to your chart, but could you give a little more context? For example, other words/categories?
nhalenguyenanh (asker) Feb 1, 2010:
I think it might imply the "tail-biting" phenomenon in piglet, it is right?

Biting

Considering you are working with a chart, I would choose 'bite.' However, I don't know the full context of the text you are working with.

Excuse me, I meant to write that I would choose the word 'biting' for the chart.

Considering your chart lists not only birth defects but also external causes of death, etc., again, I would have to agree with your idea that this is related to tail-biting phenomenon.
Example sentence:

Tail biting behavior is related to low birth birth weight, low nutrition, and below average growth rate.
