It is an old, indeed very old word.  goo 辞書 has a good explanation:

So, "By the time this journey ends, I will see a guidepost to a bright future", duh...... It is more likely, "As this journey come to the end, I will find my way, I'm ready to set sail for a bright, hopeful future.... " ;-)

sorry, even "embarrassing" spelling again. I guess I'm not hitting the r and s keys right. I'm a touch-typing typist, but I'm losing my "sight"....... ugh
