Japanese term

なじむ

Japanese to English Other Cosmetics, Beauty makeup, beauty products
This term comes up so often in cosmetic product descriptions, and I still can't quite get my finger on it. It seems so loaded with nuance... From the context, it must mean something like blend in, stick to the skin well, penetrate the skin (but if color makeup sinks INTO the skin that's BAD...), or go well with the skin (harmonize/coordinate?). Any explanations and possible wordings would be appreciated. Some examples of usage: 日本人の肌になじむ; 肌になじみやすく; (eyeshadowが)まぶたにぴたっとなじみ;(lipstickが)唇になじみながら発色し;顔全体になじませます;(輝きは)肌色にスッとなじみ;肌なじみのよい. Thanks in advance, and I look forward to the answers!

Any more? Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. I'm not closing this one up yet because I'm still interested in hearing some more.... particulary suggestions that specifically relate to its usage in cosmetics. Thank you!

blend with

Blend with the skin, blend with the skin colour etc
I would associate this kind of phrasing with cosmetic products. I hope this helps.

Thanks - and I agree that harmonize/coordinate also sound good. I don't think there is any one "correct " translation here.
agree Kazuo SAWADA : also, adapt to, and adjust to the akin are acceptable.

Thanks
agree KathyT : This would definitely be my choice, too. "Blends with" or "blends into" depending on the syntax.

agree Kurt Hammond : fits, goes well with, looks good on. from another angle such as 日本の消費者になじみやすい商品 it would mean 'easily accepted', 'likely to be popular' etc.

agree rubyhatchet (X) : This is a very flexible verb. "To adjust oneself to;" "take kindly to;" "to agree with;" "to beome accustomed to." For example, 「この気候にはなじめない。」 could be translated to "This climate doesn't agree with me."

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all for your comments. I had actually hoped to get even more suggestions (ちょっとわがままかしら), but I suppose "blend" (with or into, as Kathy notes) is usually the best rendering of this term. It's clearly not the only choice, though. I like "conform to" as well -- thanks, mulberryfield."

match well

Just one suggestion.
As you said, go well//harmonize//coordinate// can be a right expression.

go well with, applicable to, well mixed with, harmonize with, etc.

Looking at the Japanese phrases you picked up above, I may suggest なじむ in the contexts may refer to something going well with all those target parts or things. Some other similar expresions may be fit, depending on the use. Hence:

go well with, applicable to, well mixed with, harmonize with, etc.
