In any technology or process involving (a) sampling a signal, e.g., an electrical signal or (a series of images of) a moving subject; (b) processing, storing, or transmitting representations of the samples; and (c) replicating the original signal from the representations: the production of artifacts as a result of sampling at intervals too great to permit faithful replication of the original signal.

"A digitális jelfeldolgozás során az átlapolódásból származó jeltorzulásokat aliasing vagy gyűrődési torzításnak nevezik.
A gyűrődési torzítás igen szemléletes példája az a jelenség, ami a legtöbb olvasó előtt bizonyára nem ismeretlen pl. a westernfilmek nézésekor: amennyiben a vetített képen látható hintó vagy a kocsi küllős kereke gyorsabban forog a kamera 24 kép/s–os felvételi sebességénél, akkor a kereket visszafelé látjuk forogni."

"Ha nem tartjuk be a mintavételi tételt, akkor a kimeneti jelben ún. gyűrődési torzítások keletkeznek (aliasing). A 6. ábrán látható a mintavevő és -tartó áramkör kimenetén megjelenő kimeneti feszültség idő- és frekvenciatartománybeli képe.
