I am reading a passge which says:"Space does not permit us to elaborate on this period in detail. It is, as it turns out, the single longest chapter in the history of the Church. " I want to know whether the expression"the single longest chapter" means "the only longest chapter". Thanks very much.

the only longest chapter = 唯一最长的章节，逻辑上好像有点多余，因为“最长”那个“最”字就已经带“唯一”的意思了

Personally I don't think it has anything to do with time. In fact I think it's just a way of expression. Single longest is more likely to refer to the unparalleled darkest days, probably refers to the dark ages of the Church before the Renaissances.

Hi David. I am not 100% sure, not enough context. Well obviously it's about the history of catholic Church and carries a negative tone. The dark age or the middle age (preferred by some) fits that description quite well.
