undercranking 和 overcranking 是电影术语，来自于传统的手摇摄影机。cranking 就是摇手柄。摇柄速度低于正常速度叫做 undercranking ，摇柄速度高于正常速度叫做 overcranking 。如果以正常速度放映，前者的效果是动作加快，如一些武打片的快动作；后者的效果是动作变慢，如恋人在海边奔跑。
在录像机技术中，实现 undercranking 当然已经与摇柄无关，只是保留旧的术语而已。具体的实现方式有两种，一是减低拍摄速度，二是选择性的抽掉一些帧幅。这里讲的显然是后一种情况。

The process of speeding the frame rate of a camera up, so that when the captured pictures are played at the normal frame rate the action appears to be in slow motion. Historically, cameras were operated by turning a crank at a constant, required speed; hence "overcranking" refers to turning the crank too quickly. See also undercranking
