走進 (2/2)

Chinese to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Grammatical Analysis
Sentence:昨晩有一個人偷偷的走進我家,我大叫:「有賊呀!有賊呀!」

First Attempt: Last night someone snuck into the house, and I called out, "Thief! Thief!"

Second Attempt: Last night there was someone sneaking into the house, and I called out, "Thief! Thief!"

Question One (1/2): I have provided two alternatives about which I would like you to comment. My second attempt, in particular, tries to capture the construction 有A走進B. Please offer your own, if you think you can do better, but defend it with a good and proper explanation!

Question Two (2/2): What role does the character 走 play in the phrase 有A走進B? Is it merely the first character of a dual character verb -- namely 走進? Is it some sort of dynamic helper as in the English constructions "get going", "get started", "get ready" ? Or, does it stand alone telling the method of entry -- namely, on foot? The word 走進 did not appear in my online dictionary!

The PRO aspects of these questions are your ability to answer the questions -- not simply provide correct translations of the terms.

1 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Final rendering: There was someone sneaking into the house last night, and I called out, "Thief! There's a thief!" Acknowledgment: The responses this time were both humorous and disappointing. Although PK provided plenty of examples of the use of 走進, he failed to answer well my question about the use of 走. What I needed to see were examples of the sort 走C, where Ctakes on different forms and 走 retains the same meaning in each case. Yuzouren, on the other hand, focused well on the question, but appears to have been more inventive than knowledgeable. The words 走進 and 走出 may well mean "enter" and "leave", and the words 上去 and 下來 may well mean "go up" and "come down", but it is difficult to conclude from these examples that 進, 出, 去, and 來 are used as anything but verbs in combination with other verbs to create new verbs. Moreover, Chinese grammar generally dictates that adverbs appear before the verbs they modify, unless they are specially formed, such as in the construction A得 where Ais a verb and the phrase 得Bis an adverbial modifier of A. Randy's entry simply made me laugh for several reasons far too complex to describe here and barely related to the question asked. In any case, thank you everyone for your effort including Gio. I flipped a coin twice: once for PK and Yuzouren, and once for PK(winner of first flip) and Randy. Randy won. Discussion: Please see http://homepage.mac.com/moogoonghwa/tsongkit/part3/III-2b-g.html#s18 for further discussion regarding the context of this question. My very best from the land of no mountains surrounded by sea on many sides."
