Catalan term

colon

Catalan to English Social Sciences Science (general) immigration
I am doing a correction of a scientific paper, and the author has used the word "colon". This is most likely a mistranslation on the part of the author, as I don't think people stayed in their homelands while parts of their large intestines looked for better futures elsewhere. Any ideas?

"After the immigration from Europe to the American continent during XVIIIth and XIXth centuries, immigration of colons appeared towards United States and lately to Germany, France, United Kingdom and other European countries. "
