I know the usual meanings of abonar, but I don't know what it means in this context. Also, please note that this is a BACK translation. So if you think there is a better way to say this in Catalan, please let me know.

La seva disposició a participar en aquest estudi clínic abona el fet que hi ha una necessitat d'ajudar a les persones amb colitis ulcerosa, i que això només pot aconseguir-se compartint la informació i la investigació mèdica.

It sounds weird to me. Could they be trying to say something along the lines of:

can be attributed to the fact that/is due to the fact that ....

Just an idea.
