Discussion

Timothy Barton Mar 20, 2006:
For example, "va informar" means "he/she informed" - past tense - whereas if I hadn't told you I'm sure you'd have thought it was future tense. Another "false friend" is the pronoun "ne" or "n'", which most would assume has the same meaning as in French.
Timothy Barton Mar 20, 2006:
Tell your client. You can't be expected to translate from a language you don't know, however much it may seem to be similar to Spanish. Your main problem will be that you don't know the grammar of Catalan.

Let's translate this sentence into Spanish:
I perqué consti i als efectes oportuns, expedim aquest certificat = Y para que conste y a los efectos oportunos, expedimos este certificado.

Y para que conste = in witness thereof

I hereby issue this certificate, to whom it may concern.

I agree with Tim here. Catalan grammar is difficult and it would be very easy to make mistakes. I usually translate the above as I hereby issue this certificate, to who it may concern- which although not the literal translation is what I think one would find on a similar English certificate or contract.
Peer comment(s):

agree Berni Armstrong : simpler the better with these things. The English used in contracts has gone through a revolution since the Plain English Campaign 's early successes
