Chris Ellison Apr 18, 2009:
To Psicatrinus I think the original should be "limonititzades" with the extra IT. I also missed this out in my answer... I should have said "limonititzat" ;) No extra IT in English though!

limonitized

Caroline is right about limonite, and I've checked in the Diccionari de Geologia from the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (1997) which is my bible, but "limonitzat" doesn't appear. However, I've found loads of web references from native sources which use "limonitized" which would be what I would use myself.

showing hydrated iron (III) oxyd

that is what linmonita means in catalan. Your word is the adjective derived from it, meaninf 'with' or 'showing'.
Hope I helped you with this.

mixed with limonite

This is a reference to "limonite" which is an iron ore that is also sometimes found in sandstones.

The translation is "limonita" (cat) to "limonite" (eng), and a direct translation of "limonitzada" (cat) would be "limonited" (eng), but unfortunately I don't think this words exists :) hence we can use "mixed with limonite" or similar.

"... with occasional streaks of yellow, indicating presence of limonite."
Peer comment(s):

agree psicutrinius : I am afraid (cannot produce evidence, though) that it does not exist in Catalan either... beyond the author's mind. But it is handy and comprehensible.

cheers.
neutral Chris Ellison : I would just suggest that "mixed with" suggests an external source, whereas the process is an alteration of the existing minerals. >OK, but it could be anything from yellow to brown and the colour isn't stated. :)

yes, you're right. In fact, something like "... with occasional streaks of yellow, indicating presence of limonite." might be more suitable, as it follows on from describing the colour of the materials as being predominantly red.
